Information Sciences and Technology (IST) Certificate
Penn State, The Lancaster Center is offering a new certificate for adults in Information Sciences and Technology (IST). This certificate focuses on technology topics that are critically important to employers in the workplace today. It offers an excellent way for adults to begin or resume their college education part-time in the evenings or on Saturdays at a manageable pace. You can pursue the certificate to upgrade your skills or to earn credentials to enter a new field and later apply these credits toward an associate or baccalaureate degree in IST.
A Penn State certificate will be granted upon successful completion of the following four courses:
IST 110: Information, People, and Technology (3)
The use, analysis and design of information systems and technologies to organize, coordinate, and inform human enterprises
IST 210: Organization of Data (4)
Introduction to database concepts, including the storage, manipulation, evaluation, and display of data and related issues. Prerequisite: IST 110
IST 220: Networking and Telecommunications (3)
Introduction to digital network topologies, transmission media, signal modulation, digital packet switching and routing, systems integration, communications management, and security. Prerequisite: IST 110
IST 250: New Media and the Web (3)
Introduction to how the World Wide Web utilizes emerging technologies. Students acquire conceptual understanding of constructing websites. Prerequisite: IST 110
